About the trail
The Czech Academy of Sciences educational trail in Prague 8 is a science centre under the open sky. See for yourself – and try with your own hands – how a flywheel works, how to “trap” light inside an optical fibre, or play at being an electron in an atom, and much more!
We are here for families with children, for schools and kindergartens, and for the general public. Science runs through the everyday lives of all of us and is something we can reach out and touch – even if we sometimes do not realise it.
The trail was created on the initiative of the Academy’s institutes at Ládví and in Kobylisy: the Institute of Physics, the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, the Institute of Photonics and Electronics, the Institute of Plasma Physics, the Institute of Computer Science, the Institute of Information Theory and Automation, and the Institute of Thermomechanics. The Academy grounds are surrounded by housing and by the Okrouhlík nature monument, which makes the area ideal for a walk – now with a chance to peek behind the scenes of science along the way.
You can walk the trail in any direction and in any order, all at once or bit by bit: see the map below to find us. For schools we also have worksheets!
Exhibits
The Heyrovský and Nobel Mural
I had no idea I would be torn apart like this! The mural recalls the only Czech Nobel laureate in the natural sciences and Nobel's dynamite factory in Prague 8.
More information →Stop 1Galton Board
What is a normal distribution and how does it arise? Create one yourself with falling balls!
More information →Stop 2Binary Perspective
Zero and one are not merely the letters of every computer’s binary alphabet — they also stand for how scientific research works.
More information →Stop 3Flywheel
Experience the conservation of angular momentum first-hand — and find out what flywheels are used for!
More information →Stop 4Spectroscope
Look into the spectroscope to see sunlight split into a spectrum — and which elements we can find in the Sun!
More information →Stop 5Float Race
What is viscosity and where do we encounter it? Let us find out with an entertaining race of floats!
More information →Stop 6Atom Model
Do you know how tiny an atom is — and how much tinier still its nucleus? Come and see!
More information →Stop 7Waveguide
Is it possible to trap light? Come and see how!
